It’s all right there in the title.
Near Misses…
If you know anything about landscape photography, 99% of your planned shots usually end up as a near miss. Funny, that term "near miss," since it literally means "hit."if you "nearly missed," it means you hit it.
Anyways, back on topic. I recently bought the 45-100mm lens for GFX and I usually take new lenses to Rizal Bridge to test them, as long as the focal length permits. Conditions turned out to be nearly what I've been waiting patiently for. The one shot I want from there is with the clouds traveling either northwest or southeast, preferably at a pretty good clip, since movement of the bridge due to buses and trucks traveling over it limits the length of long exposures.
Photos From Long Beach, WA, 2019
Known for shit weather, the Washington coastline can be a bit of a toss up when it comes to photos, but even when the weather isn't particularly good for beach going, it can still be great for photos. During the summer, weekly events draw in thousands from around the state, so there are opportunities for all types of photographers; from landscapists, astrophotographers, street photography and even instagrammers, it's all there.
out of hibernation and back for the new year.
finally went out to take some photos since the Alaskan Way Viaduct is closing for good this weekend. i ended up hitting the Pier 66 Rooftop Park at sunset then moved back to the Pike Place Marketfront location above the viaduct. finally, i went through Post Alley on the way home. oddly, it was through Post Alley that inspired the shot i liked the most from the set.
The Learning Continues…
So I've revisited a few photos from the past year and applied what I've learned in Lightroom since then. The hope was to take what I felt were good photos and try to make them better, possibly even worth printing, since I liked the views.
Bhy Kracke Park was a failure, Kerry Park less so
So I had this vision in mind: I wanted to get a photo of the Space Needle superimposed on Mt. Rainier. Now that I have the 100-400mm ƒ/4.5-5.6 lens from Fujifilm, I'm able to get this shot... if it's even possible. I've seen others who've composited the Space Needle onto a photo of Mt. Rainier, or Mt. Baker, and even Mt. Hood (uh, wtf?) and the results always look less than stellar, mostly because I've lived here most of my life and I know those shots weren't possible using the angles they'd chosen of either object.
I wanted to do this for real, all in camera, so I consulted a map and looked around Queen Anne hill and settled on Bhy Kracke Park.
Discovery Park Lighthouse at Sunset
Discovery Park is the result of the former Fort Lawton grounds being returned to the city of Seattle. On the grounds remain a few reminders of its past and one of the sites is a lighthouse on the park's northwest corner, a point at the mouth of the Lake Washington Ship Canal just south of Shilshole Bay and Golden Gardens Park. After a stop in Magnolia, we went to Discovery Park for the walk, hiking the loop and stopping at the beach and lighthouse so I could take a few photos during the sunset.
Rizal Park, revisited.
Part of my “Seattle, Played Out” project
Moonrise at Sunrise
Caught this view while setting up to shoot at Volunteer Park. A beautiful crescent moon rising as the sun's light peeks above the horizon.
Seattle, Played Out
I've decided, based on some of my recent photos, to continue shooting from the most played out locations around Seattle. My original goal when I bought this camera was to find locations that local "photographers" haven't already oversaturated on social media, or to photograph those views in ways others haven't yet done, or can't, with... Another Played Out Location. Here’s My Contribution.
The view of Seattle from Rizal Bridge is probably the most shared photo of the city and rivals only the view from Kerry Park on Queen Anne Hill. I figured I'd give it my take since the weather cleared out a bit and I wasn't willing to take a chance to go any further in... Continue Reading →
seattle by rooftop
Location scouting in preparation for the lunar eclipse to happen early next morning. Settled on the roof of my condo as my goal is to capture the eclipse with a recognizable landmark in the foreground. My desire is to compress the perspective to make the blood red moon look much larger in relation to the foreground elements.
Seattle from afar, part 1
The plan was to take photographs predawn and during blue hour. I got out the door really late after instinctively grabbing the wrong bag the first time I left and didn't notice until I got to the pier. Ultimately, I took the water taxi to West Seattle and decided to shoot like I'd planned, just... Continue Reading →
